About Mavericks
Mavericks is a Salt Spring Island cafe serving up coffee and espresso, as well as their own small-batch ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet. They craft a variety of frozen treats in their cafe and production shop, using local single-origin BC dairy and featuring flavors and ingredients from Salt Spring Island farms. They prioritize the highest quality ingredients and enjoy collaborating with other local food producers whenever possible.
Needs & Vision
Mavericks Ice Cream sought to develop labels that appeal to a broad range of demographics, with a particular focus on Salt Spring locals and visitors. The labels needed to represent their small-batch ice cream flavors, including four core flavors and a versatile "small batch" design for seasonal and unique varieties. They sought a design that would be cohesive with their existing brand elements while appearing more professional and simple to allow for future expansion.
The vision was to prioritize simple typography over graphics or photos, emphasizing the flavor names prominently while keeping the brand name smaller. Colours were to reflect the ice cream flavors and the design needed to be straightforward enough to accommodate new products without being too niche.
The labels required a custom dieline to match the taper of the containers.
Two potential directions were considered: one minimal and modern, and the other inspired by nostalgic elements of classic ice cream.
